Restore Clear Vision at Glenhove Eye Clinic

The “Silent” Threat

Diabetic Eye Care

Managing diabetes is a full-time commitment that requires constant vigilance. While you may focus on blood sugar levels and heart health, your eyes are often the “silent” victims of the condition. At Glenhove Eye Clinic, we partner with you to prevent, monitor, and treat diabetic-related vision loss before it impacts your independence.

Diabetic Cataract

Cataract development occurs earlier in diabetics, depending on the duration and control of diabetes

Understanding Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes affects the tiny, delicate blood vessels in your retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. When blood sugar remains high for extended periods, these vessels can weaken, leak fluid, or even close off entirely, depriving the eye of oxygen.

We categorize and manage diabetic retinopathy in two primary stages

Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR)

This is the early stage where tiny vessels leak, causing the retina to swell. If the center of the retina (the macula) swells, it leads to Diabetic Macular Edema (DME), which causes blurry vision.

Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR)

This is the advanced stage. The eye attempts to grow new, fragile blood vessels to replace damaged ones. These new vessels often leak blood into the center of the eye, causing “floaters” or a complete blockage of sight.

Symptoms

Warning signs that require an immediate consultation include:

  • An increase in “floaters” (dark spots or strings in your vision).
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision (often linked to blood sugar spikes).
  • Dark or empty areas in your field of vision.
  • Difficulty perceiving colors clearly.

Advanced Diagnostic Eye Screening

At Glenhove Eye Clinic, we don’t just “check” your eyes; we map them. Dr. Mohamed utilizes high-definition diagnostic tools to catch the earliest signs of leakage:

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

This non-invasive scan allows us to see “inside” the layers of your retina to detect microscopic swelling that a standard exam might miss.

Digital Fundus Photography

We capture high-resolution images of your retina to create a baseline and track even the smallest changes year-on-year.

Targeted Treatments to Preserve Your Sight

Our treatment philosophy is centered on active intervention. We use the latest clinical protocols to stabilize the retina and protect your visual acuity.

Intravitreal Injections (Anti-VEGF)

We utilize modern medications to reduce swelling and stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels. These injections are performed in our Melrose rooms under local anesthesia, ensuring a painless and efficient experience.

Retinal Laser Treatment

Dr. Mohamed uses precise laser therapy to “seal” leaking blood vessels or shrink abnormal ones. This treatment is highly effective at preventing severe vision loss in advanced cases of PDR.

Vitrectomy

In cases of severe bleeding into the eye (vitreous hemorrhage), we may perform a vitrectomy. This surgical procedure removes the blood-filled gel and replaces it with a clear solution, restoring the path of light to the retina.
