Maintain Clear Vision at Glenhove Eye Clinic

Glaucoma

As an expert Ophthalmologist based in Melrose, Johannesburg, Dr. Tisneem Mohamed utilizes advanced surgical techniques to provide long-term stability for patients facing progressive vision loss.

What is Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a leading global health concern and is currently the second-leading cause of blindness worldwide. The vision loss it causes is permanent, as damage to the optic nerve cannot be reversed. However, early detection and appropriate treatment can significantly slow or halt disease progression. Treatments may include prescription eye drops, laser therapy, or surgery to reduce eye pressure and protect remaining vision.

Types of Glaucoma

Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

The most common form of glaucoma. It develops slowly when the eye’s drainage canals become less efficient over time, causing a gradual increase in eye pressure. Vision loss usually begins in the peripheral vision and often goes unnoticed in the early stages.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Occurs when the iris blocks the eye’s drainage angle, causing a sudden or rapid rise in eye pressure. This type can present as a medical emergency, with symptoms such as severe eye pain, headache, nausea, blurred vision, and halos around lights.

Normal-Tension Glaucoma

In this type, optic nerve damage occurs even though eye pressure remains within the normal range. Reduced blood flow to the optic nerve is thought to play a contributing role.

Secondary Glaucoma

Develops as a result of another condition or factor, such as eye injury, inflammation, cataracts, diabetes, or prolonged use of steroid medications. Eye pressure increases due to impaired fluid drainage.

Congenital Glaucoma

A rare form present at birth or early childhood, caused by abnormal development of the eye’s drainage system. Symptoms may include enlarged eyes, cloudiness of the cornea, and excessive tearing.

Pigmentary Glaucoma

Caused by pigment granules from the iris breaking off and clogging the eye’s drainage system. It most commonly affects younger, nearsighted individuals.

Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma

Occurs when flaky, dandruff-like material builds up in the front of the eye, blocking fluid drainage and raising eye pressure. It is more common in older adults and can be more aggressive than primary open-angle glaucoma.
