Restore Clear Vision at Glenhove Eye Clinic
Blurry, Distorted Vision
For many young adults in Johannesburg, these symptoms point toward keratoconus. Keratoconus is a progressive condition where the cornea thins and bulges into a cone-like shape.

What is Keratoconus?
The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped window at the front of your eye. In a healthy eye, it stays firm and round. With Keratoconus, the corneal tissue weakens, causing it to thin and protrude outward.
This irregular shape prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina, leading to distorted vision.

Keratoconus Symptoms
- Ghosting: Seeing multiple shadows around images or text
- Increased Sensitivity: Struggling with bright lights and night-time glare
- Frequent Prescription Changes: Glasses “stop working” every few months
- Sudden Clouding: Rare swelling of the cornea (hydrops)
Treatment Options
We focus on long-term corneal stability. Depending on your condition stage, treatments include:
Corneal Cross-linking (CXL)
Your ophthalmologist first removes the thin, outer layer of the cornea (epithelium). This allows the medication to reach deeper into the cornea. You should not feel any pain due to the numbing drops.
- Strengthens the cornea to stop progression
- Riboflavin drops activated by precise UV light
- Prevents the need for future corneal transplants
Specialty Contact Lenses (Scleral & RGP Lenses)
- Vault over the irregular cornea for smooth, clear vision
- Provides exceptional comfort and vision correction
Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses
Rigid Gas Permeable lenses are small, firm contact lenses made from durable, oxygen-permeable materials. By sitting directly on the cornea, they neutralise surface irregularities and create a smooth optical surface, resulting in crisp, stable vision. RGP lenses are particularly effective for conditions such as irregular astigmatism, corneal scarring, and keratoconus. While they offer excellent visual clarity, some patients may experience an initial period of discomfort due to direct corneal contact.
Scleral Lenses
Scleral lenses are larger-diameter gas permeable lenses designed to vault completely over the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera). This design creates a fluid-filled reservoir between the lens and the cornea, continuously bathing the eye and significantly enhancing comfort while delivering clear, stable vision. Scleral lenses are ideal for severe dry eye disease, advanced keratoconus, post-surgical corneal irregularities, and cases where standard RGP lenses are not tolerated or do not provide adequate comfort.
Corneal Grafting (Transplant)
For progressive karactoconus unresponsive to other treatment options, and for corneas with scaring
