Restore Clear Vision at Glenhove Eye Clinic

vision blurry, distorted, or wavy?

If you are over the age of 50, these may be the early warning signs of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). At Glenhove Eye Clinic in Melrose,

Dr. Tisneem Mohamed provides specialized ophthalmic care to help you manage this condition and safeguard your independence.

What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a progressive condition that affects the macula, the small central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. While AMD rarely leads to total blindness (as side vision usually remains intact), it can significantly impact your daily life.

dry macular degeneration

Dry Macular Degeneration (Non-Exudative)

Dry AMD is the most common form, accounting for about 90% of cases. It occurs when the tissues of the macula thin out over time or when tiny clumps of protein called drusen develop.

  • Progression: Usually slow and gradual.
  • Our Approach: We monitor the condition closely using high-resolution imaging and recommend specific nutritional protocols to slow its advance.

Wet Macular Degeneration (Exudative)

Wet AMD is less common but far more aggressive. It happens when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood into the macula.

  • Progression: Rapid vision loss can occur within days or weeks.
  • Our Approach: This is a medical emergency. We treat Wet AMD with urgent, targeted therapies to “dry up” the leakage and stabilize your sight.

Macular Degeneration Symptoms

Early detection is the key to successful treatment. We recommend scheduling an appointment at our Melrose clinic if you notice:

  1. Straight lines appearing wavy (e.g., door frames or lines on a page).
  2. A dark or empty “blind spot” in the center of your vision.
Colors appearing faded or less vibrant.
  3. Difficulty recognizing faces or reading small print despite wearing glasses.

Advanced Diagnostics and Targeted Treatments

We utilize state-of-the-art technology to create a bespoke treatment plan for every patient from Rosebank, Illovo, and beyond.

Precision Diagnostics: OCT Imaging

We use Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to capture 3D, cross-sectional images of your retina. This allows Dr. Mohamed to see beneath the surface and detect microscopic changes before they affect your vision.

Intravitreal Injections (Anti-VEGF Therapy)

For Wet AMD, we perform highly effective injections using medications like Lucentis, Eylea, or Vabysmo. These drugs block the protein responsible for abnormal vessel growth.

  • The Procedure: We numb the eye completely to ensure the process is painless and quick.
  • The Goal: To stop the leakage, reduce swelling, and in many cases, improve visual acuity.

Nutritional Support (AREDS2)

For Dry AMD, we guide you on the use of specific high-dose antioxidant and zinc formulations (AREDS2). These supplements have been clinically proven to reduce the risk of progressing to late-stage AMD.
